I am a New Hampshire nature artist with a background in biology and education, and I create mixed media paintings of New England landscapes. For over a decade I balanced my role as an educator in the biological sciences with development of my artistic practice. I now focus fully on my art career and facilitating workshops and courses that highlight the intersection of art and ecology. My goal as both an artist and educator is to encourage curiosity and a deeper appreciation for our forests.Inspiration for my art comes directly from my time on the trail. I intend to create a captured moment that honors the character and ecological relationships within the natural environments I explore but also hints at our time in the landscape. My work uses ink and acrylic layered over collaged trail maps. The vibrantly colored India inks convey the energy I feel in the landscape and are layered and mixed directly on the collaged map surface. This allows the maps to remain visible as a constant connection to place.

Debbie is a landscape oil painter preferring to paint en plein air. Finding inspiration in the constantly changing light and skies and embracing the time pressure to capture the moment on canvas. Influenced by the great Impressionists, her goal is to explore our emotional connection to the landscape and invite the viewer to see and feel the beauty, tranquility and wonder that exists in nature, hoping to build a better understanding of the importance of protecting this landscape. Debbie attended Massachusetts College of Art and has continued to grow and learn from some wonderful mentors. She has taught as an Adjunct Professor in The Fine and Performing Art Department at Colby-Sawyer College and had a Graphic Design Firm which she just recently gave up to paint full time. Debbie resides in Antrim, NH.Artist Statement: I paint primarily in oil because of the richness of color and the flexibility of this medium. Influenced by the great Impressionists, I strive to capture the energy, light and atmosphere in every painting. I want the viewer to see and feel the beauty, tranquility and wonder that exists in nature. I love the challenge of painting en plein air, finding unlimited inspiration in the constantly changing light and skies.
Sherie was born in England and has lived in the US for most of her adult life. She is a watercolor artist who is focused on the natural world. Sherie is a juried member of New Hampshire Art Association (NHAA). She has exhibited her work across New England, and awards include those from The Nature Conservancy, Plymouth MA Center for the Arts, the Photographic Society of America and NHAA. She is represented by The Kennedy Gallery, Portsmouth, NH.Artist Statement: Watercolor allows me to express how I see and feel nature and to experiment with the experience of color. I am captivated by the soft yet powerful work that can be created with this medium, and the sense of letting go that it instills in me. My intention is to capture the underlying essence of the complex natural world and portray its inherent nature, whether the spirit of an animal or the ethereal atmosphere of a scene. My work is devoted solely to the natural world, free from human elements that may distract from its focus. To help further my creative journey, all works are original.

I am a NH native raised in the embrace of the Mahoosic, Kilkenny, and White Mountain Ranges. The woods and mountains of my North Country are in my bones. Also, I am a lover of Jazz. These influences are inescapable, they are inside me, and are fused in my art.My work is Visual Jazz. The energy of Jazz, its melodies and rhythms, expressions in my work. Specifically, my Homage to the Earth series, riffs off the energy and concept of Tibetan Prayer Flags. The resulting paintings and monotypes are a series of meditations on climate change and its weather that we have yet to experience.Simply put, though, I am a “maker”. I am happiest when my hands are busy making things. I teach. I get jazzed by nurturing people's creative assets. Sharing my knowledge and seeing the gleam of excitement and understanding in a student's eyes, especially with the Little People, is the highest of all rewards. Currently, I teach at the Alliance for the Visual Arts (AVA) in Lebanon, NH, while maintaining my studios at home in Claremont, NH.
I am an outdoor/plein air oil painter with a passion for nature – the seasons, weather, light… all of it is inspiration for my work. Recognizing that we are often too busy to notice the beauty around us, I'm inspired to create paintings to remind us of the splendor that is our environment. The Impressionist and Expressionist painters of Europe, the US and Canada are my continual inspiration. Take a look at the works of the Swiss painter Ferdinand Hodler, California artist William Wendt, and the Canadian "Group of Seven" and you will recognize how their view of nature inspires my work. For me, painting is the joy of color, making expressive marks, and sharing the beauty I see in the world. The act of creating a work of art outdoors is so different… so humbling… when compared to the studio experience. Being in the woods a painter is never alone; the birds are singing, the wind might be blowing, and you race with the sun to depict a moment that really can never truly be captured. The experience is sensual: the scents, the sounds, the views – I am constantly drawn back to it. While a painting can never fully represent the experience, my work stands as a souvenir of a moment of bliss.

As a classically trained artist, Martha paints nearly every day in her home studio in Bow, NH. Her floral gardens and wooded trails supply her with a variety of natural and seasonal subjects. Her degree in Studio Art with a concentration in painting from UNH has led her to her goal of becoming a full time artist and she is forever exploring ways to expand her artistic practice. She exhibits and sells work in fine art galleries and venues in NH. She is a member of Two Villages Art Society and a juried member of NHAA. Additionally, she has taken numerous classes and workshops in the arts and comes from a family of practicing artists, including her husband who makes all of her frames.Artist Statement: Martha’s joy for vivid colors and natural subjects stems her rural NH beginnings. She is somewhat a fauvist, appreciative of their bold lines and outlines, bright colors, and moody scenes. Much of her work shows her devotion to line and stylistic application of paint. Although her subjects vary, she finds botanicals and their fragile petals and endless organic shapes a favorite challenge. She completes each painting with the hopes of passing along her joy of her subjects, color and love of the medium of paint.
